Kamloops - Vancouver (12)

We followed Hwy 1 from Kamloops to the winding mountain road called The Sea to Sky Hwy, (99) leading to Vancouver, British Colombia.

Hwy 99 follows a series of canyons and rivers climbing over the mountains to the Pacific Coast.

We passed through several small mountain communities and Indian Reservations. Along the roadside, near one of these small communities, we found this memorial to a fallen husband. Neither of us have a clue what it actually is.

The road circles beautiful mountain lakes and snow capped peaks at every turn. It is actually in rough shape, and will not tolerate very fast speeds. Otherwise, it may well be one of the best roads anywhere, no matter what you are driving, and it seems to go on forever.

The 2010 Winter Olympics will be hosted by Vancouver. Many of the snowy events will take place in the surrounding snow communities such as Whistler and Squamish.

We took a side trip today to see the ski village of Whistler.

Obviously, Whistler is a beautiful and expensive place.

Just look up to the side of any mountain to see a ski run.

We are in Vancouver tonight. I have not mentioned before, that at this latitude in the summer months, it does not get dark until very late, usually around eleven o'clock. That said, we plan to rest awhile, and go out to explore after dark. We have heard it is one of the prettiest cities at night.

We continue to use our SPOT tracker for the map lovers among us.

Post Script:

Dusk finally came around 10:15 pm. We drove downtown to see the lights and to find out what was happening, and we found "A LOT!" This city seems to double in population after dark. The downtown skyscraper lights were spectacular, and the streets were full of young people having a good time on a weekend night.

We explored the area for a couple of hours, and then used Miss Garmin to return to our motel. It was a very interesting, late night side trip, and well worth the time!

Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to know "why" I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved. ~Unknown~

  1. Woohoo, the retirees are out on the loose at night! Happy to hear you're living it up! We're still getting postcards and Keaton runs to the box each day to look for them! :)
